The impeachment inquiry into President Trump has begun in earnest. As pundits on cable tv work themselves into a lather, it’s worth taking a moment to better understand how this impeachment inquiry differs from others before it no matter where you stand on the issue.
Public opinion is shifting fast on the issue. In fact, a recent ABC News/Ipsos national pollshows that almost two in three Americans see the president’s actions as a serious problem. In fact, 55 percent said they support an impeachment inquiry even if opinions split on whether to ultimately convict the president. Sadly, 83 percent said they were not surprised by Trump’s actions.
Regardless of where this leads, the impeachment inquiry all but guarantees more policy paralysis not less. We hope that one of the outcomes is greater congressional oversight over administration practices and policies regardless of which party controls the White House.
